Tarpon Chronicles Day 1

May 12, 2014

Wind... That's odd!!!
It was forecast and we got it... 30 miles an hour.  Let's see if I can describe tarpon fishing in that stuff.  First, turn a giant fan on max.  Okay, now grab your fly rod and try to cast straight at that fan... Keep trying!  Line piling up on you?  Kinda like trying to cast it through a brick wall? I'm not finished.  Now... Are you ready?  Go and get on a big bull... No don't sit on it, STAND on it!  Now throw a little grease on his back, hit him with a cattle prod, and open the chute.  Now cast your fly!!!  Hard you say???  That's what casting a fly rod in heavy wind AND trying not to fall off the bow of a pitching boat is like.  Fun? Uh... No.

We had two grabs.  Don's fish swiped violently at the fly without getting it, and mine was hooked but decided to do a u-turn and charge the boat leaving me with a bunch of slack line.  By the time I'd gathered it up, the fly had fallen from its jaw.

It sounds like another dose is in store for us tomorrow, and then it's supposed to lay down.  That would be a nice change.
