I'm On A Tarpon Adventure

May 11, 2014

I've had a nice and much needed sabbatical from the daily reports and will be posting regularly again in August after my summer break. In the mean time I'll give you a few pics to check out from last fall salmon, winter steelhead, and spring stripers.

I am going to kick off the daily reports with the Tarpon Chronicles, a day to day summary of my fly fishing trip to the Keys... Hope you all enjoy!

I wrapped up my spring striped bass season yesterday in fine fashion, with Krysta Depp putting an exclamation point on it by landing and releasing a bass that weighed 51.6 pounds.  Funny how things go sometimes. I hadn't cracked the 20 pound mark all season and the last fish in the net turns out to be the largest of my career thus far.

Today I'm on a jet bound for Miami, where I will join my friend Don Newman for 6 days in heaven on earth, the tarpon flats of the Florida Keys.

I had been hesitant to even look at the weather and wind forecasts.  Don and I have had a tough run the previous two years, with just about every unfavorable condition Mother Nature could throw in our face.  Last year Don landed his first and only tarpon to date.  I landed only a single fish myself over twelve days of fishing, spanning 2 separate trips.

Last night I couldn't take it anymore and checked the forecast.  It doesn't look too bad, maybe a little windy the first day, but sun does appear to be in our future... We'll see.

We will be on the water at 7:30am Monday morning with our fingers and toes crossed!
